Magazine publishing: ABTA Magazine, part of Waterfront Publishing's portfolio

Magazine publishing
In 2014, I co-founded Waterfront, a publishing house and creative agency. At the company I oversaw all editorial processes – leading a team of writers, sub-editors and designers – planning, commissioning, editing and promoting the magazines, as well as shaping all visual output.

The company published several in-house magazines aimed at the travel trade and produced magazines for the likes of ABTA, Travelzoo, The Travel Village and Advantage Travel Partnership. Waterfront’s titles won numerous awards including Trade Publication of the Year at the 2019 Travel Media Awards for ABTA Magazine.

I have taken this experience to my work in the built environment. I helped deliver the Design & Access Statement for the Phoenix, Lewes, which acted as part planning document, part manifesto, demanding better and more sustainable development.

This formed part of a wider body of work I led for the organisation, including delivery and business plans, a manifesto on housebuilding (see below), and numerous pitches and tender documents. I also developed an investor-facing introductory document setting out Human Nature’s principles, projects and impact metrics in an accessible, persuasive format. My role was to conceptualise – in terms of structure and design – then edit, manage and deliver the document.

Getting Britain on the move
Magazine publishing: a manifesto for house building

With the new Labour government targeting the delivery of 1.5million homes over the course of a five-year parliament, Human Nature wanted to set out a clear position on how national policy should support more sustainable development. The aim was to articulate the reforms needed to move away from volume-led, car-dependent housebuilding and towards people-centred, resilient places.

I helped conceptualise, then edited and art directed a manifesto of better placemaking, laying out 10 clear actions in a clear, easy-to-read design. The manifesto provided Human Nature with a clear and timely policy position that informed conversations with government, stakeholders and partners. It also strengthened the launch of the Human Nature Places newsletter, helping establish the organisation’s public voice on planning and development reform.
