Communications strategy & planning

Communications strategy isn’t optional for organisations in the built environment. It really can be the difference between community buy-in and drowning in planning objections. Without it, you end up communicating in fragments: using messaging that contradicts itself, creating content for content’s sake, and leaving stakeholders unclear as to what you’re building or why it matters.

A clear strategy gives you a framework so you know who you’re talking to, what you’re saying, why you’re saying it, and how to say it consistently across every channel and interaction.

What this includes

  • Communications strategies — comprehensive frameworks covering objectives, audiences, messaging, channels and measurement
  • Content strategies — editorial planning that ensures consistent, targeted output across platforms
  • Stakeholder mapping — identifying key audiences and tailoring engagement approaches
  • Messaging frameworks — clarifying core narratives, value propositions and tone of voice
  • Campaign planning — structuring campaigns from concept through delivery
  • Editorial calendars — organising content production around strategic priorities
  • Style guides — establishing standards for language, formatting and visual identity

Strategic communications: why it matters

Without strategy, communications can become reactive, where you’re responding to immediate demands rather than building towards something more long-term. A clear framework ensures every piece of content, every interaction, every campaign instead serves a defined purpose.

For Design South East, I developed a communications strategy that integrated branding with social media, transformed newsletter quality and improved engagement across channels. This created a measurable increases in reach and interactions, including a 590% increase in LinkedIn reactions.

I always begin with analysis: understanding your organisation, objectives, audiences and existing communications. From there, I develop tailored frameworks that are practical, easy to use and which empower your team – so you’re not forever reliant on external consultants.

Strategic communications for the built environment: the Ilford Arrival
The Ilford Arrival (Periscope).

I supported Periscope with messaging, press and social media activity for the launch of the Ilford Arrival. This included shaping the story, preparing materials and helping position the project’s innovative ‘co-client’ model for media and public audiences. The forms part of wider messaging and strategy work for Periscope.
