The Outskirts
Dispatches from the edge of development and sustainability.
The Outskirts is a soon-to-launch newsletter about those reshaping place from below — the people, practices, collectives and movements working in the cracks of the mainstream system to build fairer, more sustainable ways of living.
It’s a journalistic project, grounded in reporting and conversation. Each piece draws on the voices of those doing the work — community organisers, architects, builders, gardeners and residents — to tell stories of how places change when power shifts.
I am something of a newsletter expert, having managed several newsletters over the years. I founded and launched The Lewes List, a hyper-local what’s-on publication, and the ABTA Magazine newsletter, one of the official titles for the Travel Association. I transformed the Phoenix newsletter, growing its subscriber list by more than 600%, and relaunched Design South East’s regular newsletter, significantly improving its performance.
